While eyes around the nation were on the states voting in presidential primaries on Tuesday, Davis resident Jim Provenza was looking toward another election — the Yolo County Board of Supervisors.

On Tuesday, Provenza became an official candidate for the 4th District seat on that board, filing his candidate statement and nominating signatures at the county elections

office in Woodland.

He is opposed by John Ferrera, chief of staff to state Sen. Denise Ducheny, D-San Diego. He filed his papers last week.

Davis resident Cathy Kennedy also is considering a run for the position, a campaign spokesman said.

The candidate filing period will end Friday, unless the county clerk extends it to next week. Election day is June 3.

The district is represented today by Davis resident Mariko Yamada, who is running for state Assembly. She has endorsed Provenza.

Provenza, special assistant district attorney and a former Davis school board trustee, said in a news release that he would be a strong advocate for Davis as a county supervisor.

“Local experience will play an important role when evaluating candidates for your next county supervisor,” he said. “I am proud to have served for the past four years as a Davis school board member and most recently as president of the Davis Joint Unified School District.

“My wife and I have been actively involved in the Davis community for over 15 years. Our children attended and graduated from the Davis schools. I am a lawyer with a degree from UC Davis School of Law.”

Those nominating Provenza include Yamada, Delaine Eastin, Sheila Allen, Gina Daleiden, B.J. Kline, Lamar Heystek, Eleanor

Fairclough, Donna Provenza, Rose Calabria, Rick Gonzales, Debra Hartnett, Sheryl Patterson, Harry Ohlendorf, Tim Malone,

Robert Hagedorn, Heidy Kellison, Holly Bishop, Renee Liston, Nancy Peterson, Peter Kellison, Arun Sen, Pam Nieberg, Eleanor Lake, Phillip and Jane Reedy, Carl Vandagriff, Edward Peter Hartnett, Lois Bixson, Cory Gold, Edith Gold, Ann Marty, Gayle Henreid, Cameron Black, Jennifer Hagedorn, Barbara Ohlendorf, Tom Adams and Junko Kanaya-Adams.

His endorsements include Jack O’Connell, state superintendent of schools; Jorge Ayala, Yolo County superintendent of schools; James Hammond, Davis superintendent of schools; Davis school board member Tim Taylor; former Davis Mayors Maynard Skinner, Ken Wagstaff, Bill Kopper and Julie Partansky; former Davis City Councilmen Ted Puntillo and Jerry Kaneko; former California Senate Presidents Pro Tem David Roberti and John Burton; and Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley.
